Let The Bandwagon Pass You By

bandwagon

I love being a part of something better than myself.  That is the real appeal of America.  It’s the reason people come teeming here.  It’s not for a job cleaning toilets or picking blueberries.  It’s the promise of equal protection under the law.  It’s hope for a safe place to raise children who can improve their circumstances through education.  It’s the thrill of living in a place where justice is a real thing that can be sought and won.  People come here in pursuit of safety and the prospect of happiness.

Our Constitution and The Bill of Rights protect our ideals.  These documents lift us above our collective selves and make us great.  It is when we seek to conduct our business by the spirit of these documents that we shine.  America is only as great as our continuing allegiance to the lofty ideals it was built upon.  We sink when we talk about the greatness of America while actively destroying everything it stands for.

Who would think we could sink to such depths?  We are polluting our country literally and figuratively.  We watch abhorrent behavior from every direction and do nothing.  Foolish people take center stage to spew venom and sophomoric nonsense, yet we remain silent.  We watch in horror (or glee) while these foolish/dangerous people trample the rights of our fellow Americans.  Many of our highest elected officials show only mild disapproval to the egregious comments and suggestions we hear almost weekly.  Sadly, we allow them to think a smirk and a shake of the head is all it takes to appear above it all.  The truth is, silence and mild reproach does not absolve any of us of culpability for what is happening.  Haven’t you noticed, the mud is sticking to all of us?  At the rate things are going, we really will have to make America great again; and it’s going to take a miracle.  So, get off the bandwagon!  Stop gawking, and take a stand against those who would damage our country.   We must turn the tide.

Let Them Eat Cake or: How To Salvage the 2016 Presidential Election

Let_Them_Eat_Cacke

Ignorance is not bliss.  Anger and hate speech is not a promising long term proposition for making America great again.  How did anger and hatred become such an integral part of our political landscape?  It’s disturbing and frightening to watch, but sadly no longer shocking. It fuels candidacies and excites electorates.  This anger/hatred is a thing.  It’s evident in today’s rhetoric, and its plain to see on the faces of so many who are inspired by angry, hate fueled speech.

Hatred has its particular place in a free society.  Everything does.  Its place is among haters; shouting, complaining and spreading venom among themselves.  Sometimes hatred has to be taken seriously, but it should never be given legitimate power.  Hatred married with power brings disaster on the rest of us.  It’s by products are war, oppression and of course, more hate.   Hatred has fueled much of the true evil that has been wrought in this world.  No good has ever come of it.

Haters are unreasonable, because hatred is a childish emotion.  Carefully thought out solutions are not the modus operandi of the hater .  Hater issues may be legitimate, but their proposed solutions are destructive.

How do you recognize a hater?  You know them by their fruits.  They shout and blast rather than ponder and explain.  They throw out violent, extreme and even illegal solutions without flinching.  They demean and bully.  Ultimately, they propose things that will take you out of the frying pan and in to the fire.

So, what do we do?  How do we let the haters keep hating (cause we can’t stop them), while the rest of us plod along trying to build something better?  Simple.  We explain to the haters that it’s one thing to gather and give full vent to resentment; while celebrating with like minded people about cruel and unusual remedies to the country’s problems.  It is quite another to become so disconnected from reality and common decency that you allow yourself to vote for the architect of the aforementioned remedies.  Mr. or Ms. Hater, don’t wreck the whole world, because of  your dissatisfaction with your world.  Cheer for whoever you want, but vote for a leader who will protect your right to rail against whatever and whoever you want.  The candidate who loves the law, will not seek to put himself above it, while keeping you beneath it.  Do yourself a favor and use your anonymous vote to elect intelligent, principled candidates.  No one has to know.

Do the right thing with your one vote, so that you can continue to endorse the wrong things.    Once you have secretly voted to secure all our rights (without kicking people out of their homes, or banning American citizens from returning to their homes), you can go back to hating with renewed gusto, minus the concern that you will have to send your sons/daughters to fight because of some ill conceived and combative policy that your guy will be bound to make. This is a win/win proposition.

You really can have your cake and eat it too.

Remember, those who use hatred as a political tool, have a personal agenda.  I promise it’s not to make the world a better place for you or me.

It’s His Party! He Can Dance If He Wants To (you would dance too, if it happened to you)

The_Dab

Okay, Super Bowl is in half an hour, so I have to get to the point.  Here goes. Straight to the point.  Look mom, bullet points!!

  • Tens of thousands of people go to football games.  They dress in colors that don’t look good on anyone.  Behavior that fashion mavens everywhere must find polarizing.
  • They paint their faces those same awful colors to show team spirit Huh?
  • They scream and shout and behave in ways that can only be called, well…

Hundreds of thousands of people flock to football stadiums with the hope that they will cheer their team to victory.  If this happens they celebrate like, well crazy people.  In defeat, fans show  deep disappointment, and sometimes even anger that is real and  palpable.  All of this from people who just watched.  Think about it, fans can celebrate their team victories with pure abandon.  These fans did not run, tackle, catch and throw their way to glory.  They just watched.  Watched and celebrated.  For the price of a ticket they can celebrate in almost any way they see fit.

The way I see it.  If it’s the fan’s prerogative to celebrate in whatever way he or she chooses, then it is the obligation of the one who is being celebrated to celebrate in whatever way he chooses.  Fair is fair.  So, Mr. football player.  If you want to jump, flip, twist, shout, “dab”, look at stats, smirk or just stoically go back to the sidelines, it’s all good.  It’s your party!  Do what you want to .

The game is for us to watch, but it doesn’t belong to us.  It belongs to those guys.  You know, the ones running, jumping, strategizing, hitting and getting hit.

This isn’t your dream.  It’s theirs  Watch or don’t watch, but don’t presume to judge a player’s reaction to his own success.  It’s polarizing.
